A series of unfortunate events...

Matt and I returned from Paris this evening. And although it was quite a trip and I'm excited to blog about the good things we did, I have to journal the following. (And, as you read, please withhold any judgement on my character, thought process, weaknesses, etc...)

1. We got to Treviso airport on Monday night ready for our trip. I had spent most of the day worried about leaving HD behind - not because the Nonni can't handle it but because I've never been away from her for more than a night and I've never been more than an hour away. Anyway, I wasn't myself and everyone could tell. I was a ball of nerves - mean nerves if I must admit. Well, by the time we got there, I was finally feeling excited. When we (finally - after 45 minutes in line) got to the front the check in lady (I'm sure that's her official title) took an extra long time looking at my passport and ticket. Why? Because my last name on my passport - maiden...on my ticket - married. Problem? Not really, unless you don't have another form of ID - which I didn't! I FORGOT MY WALLET AT HOME! Ya, that's a problem. I had nothing on me to prove that I was in fact the person listed on the ticket. The original check in lady was going to accept a fax of my ID, but another check in lady came around and said it was too late and that we'd have to pay a not-so-small fee to change my name on the ticket. Boy did I feel sheepish. I actually ended up in tears...luckily Matt was really nice and didn't make me feel anymore stupid than I already felt.

2. So that was taken care of "just in time" - or so the check-in lady made us think - we later found out, we had more time than she let on. We were rushed through the security line and this is where the second "duh!" moment comes in. We didn't check any luggage so everything I wanted to use while in Paris had to go in my carry on. I looked at the signs (all in the metric system) and remembered that I had to have all my liquids in one bag. So I sent my shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste (Matt had a small tube) home with Matt's dad. What I failed to realize was that my facewash and moisturizer and my hair product were all over 100 ml. Double oops! Well, at this point there was no more time to check baggage and Matt's dad had left with the car. So...I had to leave all my products there...to be thrown away! Oh man! There was NOTHING I could do. We just left.

It took me about half the flight to stop kicking myself and move on. I just felt so dumb...I mean those are ROOKIE mistakes and after all my careful planning before the flight to Italy - you think I'd remember.

And by the way, all the worrying about HD was in vain. She was great! She didn't even know I was gone. She and Nonna had a GREAT time. I still haven't seen her because she was asleep when I got home, but I'm pretty excited to give her a big hug tomorrow morning. I should have spent more time worrying about myself and what I was packing. Lesson learned.

Well, I'm off to bed. I'm tired but stay tuned for the Paris Post and some great pictures!

it will be funny in about a month I think. I had a ...POCKET KNIFE in my carry on once. hello! could I get more careless? it's painful to have to leave things that are of value...oh well.

No judgement here...when it comes to leaving your little children behind, all common sense tends to go out the window. I have been there and done that. I'm glad that you are back with her safe and sound. (wasn't it fun though? As hard as it is to leave, it's nice to have your hubby one on one every once in a blue moon)

Rachel, I'm sorry, but I am very happy you got to go and you returned home to Hailey. No Worries! Hakuna Matata!

Which part are you worried about us judging? Leaving your wallet home or worrying about HD? Either way, happens to everyone once in a while! It's a bummer when you have to pay money for your mistakes, but it's only money. You'll survive.

It happens to the best of us...what a bummer. I'm glad you had a good time in the end and can't wait to hear about it.

I can relate to your second "duh" moment, I do it almost everytime I travel. Glad it all worked out and you had a great time in Paris.

Oh I can sympathize! I worry myself sick before trips with all of the stuff we've gone through. I got my passport amended right after we got married to show my married name. All it did was give me a typed note on the back page explaining the name switch, but at least it solved the problem. You should do that.
