Our First Excursion: Slovenia
This morning we had plans to go to Venice, but it was raining, so again those plans were postponed. But we decided to venture in another direction. Matt's Dad recommended we go to Slovenia to see some caves, so we (Matt, Nonno, HD and I) headed about two hours southeast to a town called Postojna to see the caves (Grotte di Postumia). The drive was a little crazy because of all the fog, but luckily Matt knows what to do in fog. However, because of the fog I missed the "Slovenia" sign at the entrance of the country, but we do plan to go back...next time.
Anyway, when we arrived at the caves, we were about two hours early for the next tour, so we ventured about 6 miles into the hill and found the Predjama Castle. The castle was built directly within a cave and was rather impressive from the outside. We decided not to tour the inside, but got some really great pictures outside. It was gorgeous up there - despite the clouds and rain. However, as we were leaving the sun came out and rested on the hill...so pretty.
At three, we headed back down to the caves. The tour started with a "train" ride...the train is built kind of like a roller coaster, without the protective bars. It took us about 3 km in and 20 meters down from the entrance and then we got out and walked about a mile with a tour guide explaining various features of the caves. It really was amazing. Even though cameras were strictly forbidden, there was a group there without a camera, everyone was taking pictures and the tour guides didn't seem to care. We definitely took our fair share.
All in all, it was a really fun day. I kept thinking, "Wow, here I am, in Europe, in Slovenia, a former communist country, walkin 300 feet below ground, and taking pictures of stalactites and stalagmites. How did I get here?!" I love moments like that. A big huge thank you to Matt, Nonno and HD who made it all possible. HD was a gem the entire time...she slept through most of the tour and when she wasn't sleeping she was looking around enjoying the sights with the rest of us. She's a good little girl.

How fun and amazing pictures! Sad that I had to ask where Slovania was, but you learn something new everyday, right?
Man, that girl (HD) just has no idea how lucky she is! What a trip.
What a great trip and what beautiful pictures. I'm so happy you are having a wonderful time with Matt, HD and Matt's parents. You and they need to enjoy every single minute. What a blessing you are able to spend that precious time with them and enjoy Matt's homeland. Keep taking pictures, need I tell you that?
Wow! Those pictures are great and really made me envious. Please keep posting great pictures.
